A keeper, forever. This statement-making bag with uniquely long and wild fringes is one-of-a-kind eloquently woven with thinly cut rattan strips and dyed with plant extracts by indigenous weavers of Kalimantan, all the way down in the island of Borneo - for the edgy you.
We know your friends will be asking so get ready to tell the handcrafting story below.
100% rattan: Rattan is a naturally renewable palm that grows in the forest by climbing from the forest floor to the trees. Majority of world's rattans are found in Indonesia's forests.
100% plant dyed: Black from a mix of rambutan, stinky bean leaves and other local plants.
A Love Story of Giving
Dayak women weavers in Kalimantan (the Indonesia part of Borneo island) created this wild bag using the famous Borneo-style rattan weaving technique. At first, no one from the 25 weavers wanted to make Kathryn. The design is not what they already do, and will need some engineering to get the fringes right. Until Rowena raised her hand and took the challenge. Kathryn bag was born, and Rowena was proud to give birth to the tribe's wild design. It took 10 days to complete. Men do the harvesting of ready-to-harvest rattan in the forest, then cleaning, drying, cutting and splitting. To get the black dye, the rattan strips were soaked overnight in mud filled with a mix of rambutan, stinky bean leaves and other local plants. Handepharuei, a social enterprise founded by young social entrepreneurs Randi, Liza and Yoan from the Dayak tribe, creates sustainable livelihoods for rural communities while safeguarding their indigenous weaving culture and preserving the integrity of the community.
