CRAFTY. A yogi customer suggested this boxy Sari. No-fuss to wear with any bottoms. Handpainted by Kadek, a 16-year-old emerging artist using Batuan painting style and waterproof sharpie pens. "One day I dreamed that I was playing and swimming with the koi fish when the koi fish was in danger. I like koi fish because it is a fish that is sheltering under the shade and umbrella of life," says Kadek.
100% of net profit from this pouch will support the Batuan art community who is teaching Kadek and 50 other young artists, ages 7-16, to be the next generation of Batuan artists.
What is Batuan painting style? Batuan style is known for the use of somber colors, generally black and white, with immense attention to detail, stylized vegetation and the use of scenes of Bali life. History has it that in the 1930s, traveling anthropologists Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson were awed by the charcoal painting of young talents in Batuan. They gave them pencils and commissioned over 800 paintings. That opened a floodgate of creativity and livelihood for Batuan painters.
