Two original art pieces, painted on both sides of a truly sustainable luxury yet functional bag by Ketut Sadia, one of two brothers in a well-known family of master painters in Batuan, Bali. Using the ancient Batuan black-and-white art technique with a bamboo stick, Sadia choose the theme of "Bali Ceremonies" to reflect his belief in the importance of faith and respect for cultural traditions to stay grounded in life especially during challenging times like the global pandemic.

A Love Story of Giving

Batuan village in Bali dates back from the 11th century. During the 1930's, American anthropologists Margaret Mead and British anthropologist Gregory Bateson were doing research in this area and gave the Batuan artists some art supplies. They wanted to see what the artists could create in the midst of social-cultural changes in Bali. Batuan artists presented their finely detailed work in "black ink on paper" reflecting their concerns for magic, power and rituals. Batuan's signature "black ink" art was born.

Enter brothers Ketut Sadia and Wayan Diana, today's famous master artists in Batuan, with art collectors investing in their exquisite and vibrant work on gigantic canvas. To preserve this artistic tradition, they give free art classes to village kids knowing that they could help blossom the future heir of this village treasure. That was pre-pandemic. The current pandemic stopped all that.

One day in April 2021, as we were helping them with volunteer activities for the village kids, we all agreed - it's time for Sadia and Wayan to resume sharing their masterpiece to the world while sustaining their livelihood. Not on gigantic canvas, but on functional canvas bags so more art lovers can own a piece of their work. Love Stories made the elegant and strong bags using the same canvas fabric they use for painting.
